Naxos Island is the main island of the Cyclades archipelago, located in the Aegean Sea among popular Greek resorts such as Santorini and Mykonos. Naxos is not the most touristy island, and during our week there, we only heard our native language spoken once. The majority of visitors are Greeks and Europeans, and the island lacks big chain hotels, providing a cozy and tranquil atmosphere – an ideal place for a relaxing and leisurely vacation, perfect for recharging and unwinding

The main town of Naxos Island is Chora, a city with a rich history, labyrinthine cobbled streets, and charming white Greek houses. Here, you’ll find a variety of restaurants, shops, and artisanal jewelry stores. At the foot of the town lies the port and the waterfront, while above them stands the Burgos, the winding streets of the old town, and atop the hill, the Castle of Castro, built by the Venetians.

A distinctive symbol of Naxos is the Portara, the remains of an unfinished 5th-century BC temple dedicated to Apollo. The main attraction for tourists is to watch the sunset from the gateway, and as a result, many people gather here in the evenings.

The main beach of Chora town is Agios Georgios, which is well-equipped and offers sunbeds for rent at reasonable prices. There are plenty of restaurants and taverns to choose from to suit any taste. For a change of scenery, you can visit more remote beaches such as Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Kastraki. However, if you desire a more secluded experience, it’s worth visiting Aliko Beach.

Renting a car, one day is enough to drive around the entire island and visit almost all the attractions. After staying in the island’s capital, Chora, you can head to the opposite side of the island, crossing the mountain pass via a narrow serpentine road with breathtaking views, to the small fishing village of Moutsouna on the eastern coast of the island. Several taverns line the waterfront, known for their dishes made from freshly caught fish and seafood, all with a view of the ancient structure that was used to operate a cableway, transporting emery from the mountain mines to the seaport for loading onto ships and subsequent transportation to Europe.
